OnePlus History

OnePlus was founded on December 16, 2013 by former Vice President of Oppo, Pete Lau and Carl Pei. According to the Chinese government's documentation, the only institutional shareholder in OnePlus is Oppo Electronics. Lau denied that OnePlus was a wholly owned subsidiary of Oppo and stated that Oppo Electronics and not Oppo Mobile (the telephone manufacturer) is a major investor in OnePlus and that they are "in talks with other investors". The main purpose of the company was to design a smartphone that could balance advanced quality with a lower price than other phones in its category, believing that users would "not be satisfied" with lower quality devices produced by other companies. Lau explained that "we will never be different just to be different." All that needs to be done is to improve the current user experience in everyday use and has also shown that it has wanted to be "Muji in the technology industry" and underlines the focus on high quality products with simple and user-friendly designs. Lau's affiliation with the Oppo N1 platform, OnePlus has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Cyanogen Inc. to base the Android distribution of its products on a variant of the popular custom ROM CyanogenMod and use its brands outside of China.

The company presented its first unit, OnePlus One, on April 23, 2014. In December 2014, OnePlus, along with the release of OnePlus One in India exclusively through Amazon, announced its intention to establish a presence in the country planning to open 25 official walk-in service centers throughout India.

The system was considered necessary for the young company to handle high demand. OnePlus closed the invitation system with the launch of OnePlus 3 on June 14, 2016. Announced through an interactive VR launch event, OnePlus 3 was originally offered for sale in the VR app itself. OnePlus announced the event as the world's first VR procurement experience. The phone was put up for sale later that day in China, North America and the EU on OnePlus website and in India at Amazon India.

"Smash the Past" campaign

On April 23, 2014, OnePlus launched the "Smash the Past" campaign. The campaign asked selected participants to destroy their phones on video in an attempt to buy OnePlus One for $ 1 (US). Due to the confusion, several videos of unelected users, which falsely fought and destroyed their phones before the launch date of promotion, were published.

The campaign has been severely criticized for environmental waste and security issues due to batteries and telephone components that present potential hazards to participants who destroy their phones. OnePlus allowed the winners to donate the old phone. There were 140,000 competitions entries with 100 winners.

Users were asked to post a picture of themselves with the OnePlus logo, the photos would be shared in the forum and could "like" by other forum members. The hours after being announced, the campaign was interrupted due to sexual consequences in the electoral process. OnePlus said some rogue employees created the campaign.

Ban in India

On December 16, 2014, the High High Court of India and Delhi banned the import and sale of OnePlus One phones in India following a lawsuit from Micromax as it has exclusivity for cyanogen software OS mobile phones in India.

On December 21, 2014, the ban on the import and sale of the unit in India was lifted. The device continues to be sent with the Cyanogen OS; However, a custom version of Android was released specifically designed by OnePlus and called OxygenOS, which allows you to sell OnePlus devices later in India.
